Habitat for Humanity House
affordable, accessible & healthy housing
2010 Sustainable Building & Design project
The Peterborough affiliate of Habitat for Humanity was in need of a fully accessible home design and wanted to meet the LEED Platinum standard for an infill project in a Peterborough subdivision. Combining high-performance with local, natural building materials, the low-key exterior masks a highly innovative building.
Prefabricated straw bale wall panels were constructed off site and installed in one day
Straw/clay gable walls are finished with locally sourced earthen plaster
Grid-tied PV system and solar hot water heating
Hydronic heating with ducted heat recovery ventilation system
Natural, non-toxic finishes used throughout
